1830
Michael Thonet experimented with bending steamed wood to create furniture; Thonet and his sons began to produce innovative "bentwood" furniture, which became known for being practical, inexpensive and refined.
1856 The Model No. 14, which became Thonet's most famous chair design, was developed in the Boppard workshop. 1857 Gebruder Thonet received a patent for the bentwood process of manufacturing; the Thonet family had perfected assembly-line production, becoming a major manufacturer of bentwood furniture. |
